The last 3rd of August 2011,our publication listened the BBC Radio 4 debate at the London School of Economics to heard supporters of the two economist argue their case. The Podcast can be found at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-14366054

People from the Keynesian side argued that the different stimulus packages or stimulus programs in the West have failed because:

"Quantitative easing failed because almost all the new money the government created has gone to shore up the balance sheets of irresponsible bankers"

The supporters of the Hayek case argued that according Keynes theory, it wouldn't have mattered in what the Money is expended, it would have had a multiplier effect in the economy.

People from the Hayek quoted Keynes famous statement that:

"Government program that pays people to dig and refill ditches would provide new income for those workers to spend and circulate through the economy, creating even more jobs and income."

From this discussion came to us the question, if it couldn't be the case that the central banks, by bailing out the bankers, made the private banks to send part of this Money in investments abroad –Thus the Keynesian policy failed in the original countries by not stimulating domestic demand, but the Banks finally poured this Money in different investments abroad, and part of this Money, apart of fueling global inflation from commodities to properties–as Hayek would have argued such policy would produce- also did create a Keynesian stimulus to the countries receiving the Money.

This is the Basic question we like to pose to our Readers. What does it means for economies such as Uruguay..is part of the recent boom a result of a Keynesian stimulus that was put in the wrong hands.....in a distant country thousands of miles away?

Mal ciududano atrapado infraganti -Matricula de Montevideo LHA 1533

LO QUE HAY QUE DECIR pudo constatar que de esta camioneta se tiro en forma desvergonzada un papel a la via publica. Cabe preguntarse que cuesta guardarla y tirarla al llegar a casa..el hecho sucedió el 20 de Diciembre a las 19:00 horas.

No podemos más que indignarnos ante este tipo de comportamientos que los ciudadanos más o menos educados tenemos que soportar a diario. Al menos podemos dejar constancia pública en internet de que alguno de los integrantes de esta camioneta hizo este mal acto en el día mencionado. La matricula se ve claramente que es LHA 1533.

Esta foto solo será sacada si el propietario del vehiculo nos manda fotos que muestren y prueben feacientemete lo siguiente:

-Es el el pasajero o conductor del vehiculo, (Por ejemplo foto reciente en el vehiculo–adjuntar un diario actual en la misma)

-Prueba de que ha realizado alguna tarea de limpieza como barrer la vereda, juntar una bolsa de papeles

-Disculpa en la sección comentarios de este blog.

Bad citizen caught in fraganti -LHA 1533 plate, Montevideo Registry

WHAT NEEDS TO BE SAID spotted somebody throwing away a paper from this truck, without apparent shame for the act. We can only wonder what terrible effort it could take to save and throw it once arrived at home. The sad act happened the 20th of December of 2010. Why bothering, the window is open and the Montevideo Streets are while..The rest of us have to stand impotent and see this daily lack of respect done by many of us.

At least, and out of anger, we can leave public testimony in Internet, that at least one of the passengers of this truck committed this aggression to the City and their inhabitants. The plate is from Montevideo with number LHA 1533.

We will happily remove the picture, should the involved person show us proof that he was in the truck, send us proof of having performed some kind of cleaning work of the streets, as well as leaving an apology in the comments section of this blog.

Montevideo no es un lugar que se destaque por su cocina exótica, si por esto se entiende comida tailandesa, hindú, Curry etc. Pero no se puede negar que si es un buen lugar para comer Pizza, hecha en hornos de leña y con exquisita muzzarela salsa, así como el infaltable Faina.

¿Cuáles son los 10 Mejores lugares para comer Pizza de Montevideo?

Fue esta la pregunta que LO QUE HAY QUE DECIR hizo a un grupo de experimentados y veteranos con muchas horas y metros de la Pizza comida, durante una reunión en la que se hacía Pizza a la parrilla.

Debido a limitaciones de tiempo, no hemos hecho un estudio exhaustivo de cómo son las Pizzas en diferentes lugares…

En teoría habría que ir a los lugares y calificar la pizza en sus varias cualidades como:

Masa, Salsa, Queso, Horno. Faina, servicio..

De todos modos y mientras dicho relevamiento no sea realizado, incluimos algunos lugares que fueron mencionados por nuestros entrevistados, en lo que a Pizza se trata en Montevideo.

En cuanto al relevamiento, sugerimos que sea incluido dentro de los censos regulares que lleva nuestra Dirección Nacional de Estadística y Censo. Creemos que sin duda dicho relevamiento sería un gran uso del dinero del erario público.

Montevideo is not a remarkable place for oriental cuisine, such as Tai, Indian, and Curry etc. But it cannot be denied that when coming to Pizza it is a good place, made in wood fired ovens, with delicious mozzarella chess and tomato sauce, and side by the unavoidable Faina.

What are the 10 top places to eat Pizza in Montevideo?

Such was the question posed by WHAT NEEDS TO BE SAID to a group of experimented and seasoned veterans, with many hours and meters of eaten pizza (Pizza in Uruguay sells by the meter), while in a meeting in which some Pizza was being made in the barbeque (Parrilla –yes, even Pizza is made in the barbeque in Uruguay)

Due limits on time and resources , we haven’t made a detailed an scientific assessment of the different Pizza places in Montevideo time. The following characteristic could be measured:

Dough, sauce, chess, oven, faina, service..

However, despite such study not being made yet, we include some places worth knowing, that were mentioned by the interviewed as outstanding for some reason, in what regards to Pizza in Montevideo. Regarding the assessment, we can suggest that being included in the next National Census by the Bureau of Statistics of Uruguay (Direccion Nacional de Estadistica y Censos). We certainly believe that would be tax money being put to good use.

Unas pocas semanas atrás Lo que hay que decir visito la Estancia Bella Vista, este magnífico lugar está ubicado en la Ruta Interbalnearia, en el Kilometro 87. El lugar es magnífico para relajarse, y poder ir a las playas cercanas, como Playa Hermosa, Piriapolis y aun Punta del Este, mientras uno se queda en el campo entre la Sierra de las Ánimas y el Mar.

A few weeks ago members of What needs to be said visited the Estancia Bella Vista; this great place is located in the Interbalnearia Route, at the Km 87. The place is great to relax and have it as a base, to go to the nearby beaches, like Playa Hermosa, Piriapolis and even Punta del Este, while staying in a countryside place between the Sierra de las Animas hills and the Sea.

Hoy, el diario La Republica de Montevideo anuncian que en 1959 el entonces embajador norteamericano Robert F. Woodward informaba que algunos ranchos" (estancias) del norte del país serían base de operaciones de platillos voladores (flying saucers). El informe estaría acompañado por anexos y numerosos planos e imágenes.

Today, La Republica newspaper of Montevideo published that in 1959 the then U.S.A Ambassador Robert F. Woodward was informing the State Department that in some ranchs in the north of Uruguay, flying saucers were landing ant taking off. The inform had several anexes, maps and images.

It all turned out to be a joke by the La Republica newspaper, for the Innocent´s day, as it is traditional to do every year in Uruguay.

Imaginando grandes obras en Montevideo / Dreaming great public works in Montevideo

Desde que era adolescente, soñaba cómo podría ser la ciudad, si fuéramos un país más rico, con visión y con voluntad política de llevar a cabo esa visión. Yo solía andar mucho en bicicleta, tenía un gran mapa de la ciudad en mi cuarto, y planeaba mis aventuras con anticipación en éste. Aventuras como ir en mi bicicleta rodado 20 hasta la rambla.

Bueno, el primer sueño que me viene a la mente era el del Metro de Montevideo. Incluso dibujaba las líneas sobre los mapas de Montevideo que se publicaban en el Gallito Luis de los Domingos.

Me podía imaginar a la gente saliendo por las estaciones de la Plaza Independencia o Estación Plaza Entrevero, una línea bajando por Avenida del Libertador, la Estación Palacio Legislativo. La línea yendo al este por 18 de Julio claro, el tranvía en medio de Avenida Italia, yendo hasta el Aeropuerto, con una estación subterránea en Tres Cruces. Puedo imaginarme a extranjeros y locales viajando cargados con sus mochilas y valijas, con Aire Acondicionado para el verano, música clásica, todo alimentado por electricidad generada por fuerza hidroeléctrica o eólica.

Unos días atrás, en la Feria del Parque Rodo, vi que estaban vendiendo postales de una imaginaria Montevideo con estaciones de Metro, habían líneas, y fotos de estaciones en 18 de Julio. Leí en La Diaria , que el creador de estás es Marcos Caltieri, uno de los editores de la Revista Guacho. La idea del Metro no es nueva, y leyendo el artículo mencionado, aprendí que hasta hay una fundación Metro, y que una propuesta fue presentada 50 años atrás por un francés. Cambiando ahora de sueños, he pensado que Montevideo debería tener un túnel entre el fin de la ciudad vieja, en la Escollera Sarandí, y el Cerro de Montevideo. Esto pondría al Cerro de Montevideo y el oeste de Montevideo bien cerca del centro. El cerro de Montevideo y el área de la bahía es una gran zona, que ha sido destruida, primeramente por la industria, la refinería, la estación de UTE, y muchas otras industrias que descargan en el Pantanoso y Miguelete. La bahía es necesaria para el puerto de Montevideo, en sí mismo una gran fuente de actividad económica que no puede ser trasladada.

Al poner el túnel submarino, el cerro atraería mas habitantes de clase media, y sus actuales habitantes tendrían mayores posibilidades de acceso a trabajo y diversión en zonas del centro de la ciudad. Se evitaría así el continuo desplazamiento del centro hacia el Este de la ciudad.

-Techo para el Estadio Centenario, no hay necesidad de aclarar que la idea es viejísima, ¡Quizás este hecho para el 2030! :-)

-Autobuses de plataforma baja, uso obligatorio de catalizadores de escape, indicador electrónico que informe cual es el próximo ómnibus y su hora de llegada. Un sistema de señalizado simple y comprensible para los extranjeros y los locales, así uno puede viajar sin tener que andar preguntando.

-La siguiente medida es bien barata, más y más sendas para bicicletas en toda la ciudad. Lugares para trancar las bicicletas, para comenzar se puede ponerlas enfrente de las comisarías. Pero así como no faltan cuida coches, se podría ver un sistema de cuida bicicletas también.

Otra idea barata, de la que puse un post hace poco, fue sobre pintar las medianeras vacías de los edificios.

Otra idea es realizar un concurso internacional de escultura por año, por algún monto interesante, la escultura ganadora, seria construida en la Rambla de Montevideo. Cada año, una nueva escultura aparecería, podemos empezar poniéndolas cada un Kilometro, teniendo más de 20 años para completarlas, después de este plazo podemos empezar a llenar los medio Kilómetros, y así sucesivamente. Así, le agregamos arte a nuestra hermosa Rambla.

-Fin de los Cantegriles. Bueno este es un gran sueño realmente, es muy triste ser un país donde la gente los tenga que habitar. Obviamente una sociedad sin ellos, es una sociedad con cierta riqueza y una seguridad social que da mejores opciones para los más pobres. -También es importante controlar los bordes de la ciudad, la mejor idea sería crear un cinturón verde, y poner su cuidado a cargo del ejército que cuidaría del nuevo Parque. (Como Santa Teresa por ejemplo)

-Continuación de Avenida del Libertador hacia la Rambla, se imaginan estar en la Plaza del Entrevero, mirar hacia el Sur, y ver una gran avenida, con anchas peatonales laterales, bajando hasta el Mar.

-Que me dicen de tener trenes rápidos, reduciendo el tamaño del país, poniendo Salto a 2 o 3 horas por ejemplo. Cuál sería el impacto de tener esto, o aun mas, imaginemos tener un TGV por ejemplo

!Bueno, mientras esto no suceda..espero que el ´bondi´no demore en pasar!

Dreaming great public works in Montevideo

Ever since I was teenager, I used to dream, how the city could be, If it would have more money, vision and political will. in this country...when I was a kid, I used to cycle a lot this city, and had a big map of the city in the wall of my bedroom. There I could plan in advance my adventures..get to the sea in my 20 inch wheels bicycle..etc...
Well, the first dream that came to mind was the Montevideo Metro indeed...I even used to draw the lines and the stations...I could imagine people pouring out the station Plaza Independencia...Plaza Entrevero, one line going down Avenida del Libertador, Palacion Legislativo ST...

The line going west via 18 de Julio...of course, the tramway in the middle of Avenida Italia, going all the way the Airport, with an underground station in Tres Cruces..I could see foreign and locals packing bags and traveling to/from the airport...a clean access to the city..A/C in summer..powered by hydroelectric or wind power...

Well a few days ago in the Feria del Parque Rodo, I saw there were selling imaginary postcards of Montevideo with underground stations...there were lines, and pictures of stations along 18 de Julio...I read in La Diaria newspaper, that the creator of this is Marcos Caltieri, one of the editors of the Guacho Magazine Guacho Magazine (Spanish only) The idea of a Metro is not new, and reading the mentioned article in La Diaria, I learn that there is a Metro Fundation and that a proposal was presented 50 years ago by a French. Moving now into other dreams, I though that the city of Montevideo could have a Tunnel between the end of the Ciudad Vieja, at the Sarandi Breakwater, and the Cerro de Montevideo. This would put the Cerro of Montevideo, and the West side of Montevideo, between reach of the city.

The Cerro of Montevideo and the Bay is a great area, that has been neglected, first by industry, the Refinery, the UTE Termic power station and many other industries that drain out of the Miguelete and Pantanoso River.
The bay is required for the Port of Montevideo, itself a power house of the economy, and can not be moved.
But by putting and undersea tunnel, the Cerro of Montevideo could attract more middle class inhabitants, and its current inhabitants could have quick access to the City. It would help to avoid the continuous shift of the Capital to the West.

-Roof for the Centenario Stadium..Needless to say I am not the first to have this idea, well, perhaps it will be ready for 2030!!! :-)

-Low platform buses, compulsive catalyst exhaust for all vehicles, electronic display of Next bus in the bus stops..needless to say, an understandable bus signaling plan, so both foreigners and locals can move around without having to ask...

Here is a cheap one...more, more and more Cycle lanes all around the town...then places to lock the bicicles...worry about it being stolen..well, start putting it in front of all Police stations to begin with, and put some places with a guard, I mean we have in this city plenty of guys taking care of cars anyway..

Another cheap one I posted about just recently is about painting the big empty walls of the buildings...

I also have an idea, and it is to hold an international sculpture contest every year,for some interesting amount of money...the winning sculpture, would be constructed along the Rambla of Montevideo...in this way, year after year an scuplture will appear, we can start placing one at each Kilometer..it will take more than 20 year to complete it...after that, we can fill the Kilometers..and place one each 500 meters...and so on...
We can add nice art to the walks in the Rambla then...

No more slums or Cantegriles...well this one is a big dream really..it is very sad to be a country where citizens have to live in them...obviously I would dream with a society where there is wealth, and a social security that makes not tempting the idea of living in such a place..
Also it is important to control the growth of the city edges, the best idea would be to create a green belt, and put the military to administer the new created ´Park´ encircling the Urban areas.

Continue the Avenida del Libertador towards the Rambla, can you imagine to be in the ´Plaza del Entrevero´and look toward the south, and see a big avenue going down the hill to end in the sea...

What about fast trains, to make the country smaller, allow students, tourists, businessman and professional to travel on the day up north in 2-3 hours to Salto for example..what would be the impact of such a possibility by having a fast train, or even a TGV train...

Well...bye for now..by the meantime I hope the bus will come soon!!

¿Ingles idioma oficial en Uruguay? / ¿English as oficial language in Uruguay?

La siguiente es una idea que creo, no requiere gran esfuerzo para ser implementada, y podria contribuir a hacer nuestro pais un lugar aun mas abierto a los negocios internacionales.

Se trata de una ley que permita la realizacion de contratos, actas, titulos, etc. en ingles, dandole al ingles un estatus similar al español para la realizacion de negocios tales como contratos, transferencias, compras etc.

Dejo la idea en bruto, sin duda algun abogado podra introducir las correcciones del caso. Pero la idea es hacerle la vida mas facil a un extranjero que no hable español para hacer negocios en el lugar. No se trata solo de extranjeros de paises angloparlantes, sino de personas de todo el mundo realmente.

En la misma linea se deberia poner toda la carteleria del pais en formato bilingue, y tener alguna radio en ingles tambien. Un paso aun mas audaz seria tener cursos en ingles en las universidades y postgrados en este idioma.

Se trata de ir en la linea de crear un pais inteligente e internacional, que sea una plataforma de negocios e intercambios culturales, de flujo, entrada y salida de ideas y servicios.

I have an idea, which I believe, does not require a great effort to be implemented, and that would help to make our country an even more open place to do business.

The idea is simply to create a law, that will allow oficial documents and contracts of certain kinds to be written in english, without the need of a translation. Giving for this purposes, a simmilar status to English to Spanish to make contracts such as purchases, sales, transfers etc.

This is the rough idea, I leave to some law expert to make the improvements and corrections to make this feasible. The idea is to make the life of foreigners doing business here easier. We are not talking about native english speakers only, but people from all parts of the world.

In the same line of though, we could also put all road posting in both languages and have some radio station in english as well. A more ambitious step would be to have University courses and even Post graduate courses taugh in English.

All this should aim towards creating a more thriving place to develop activities, exchange products, culture and services to the world.

A pintar las medianeras!! / Lets paint the ugly empty walls of big buildings

La ciudad de montevideo esta llena de edificios bastante insulsos que no crean un lindo aspecto visual....
La propuesta es pintar unas 100 o 200 medianeras, en sitios claves de la ciudad con obras de Arte, ya le pase la idea a alguien allegado a Bellas Artes.

La idea no es nueva, pero contribuiria a embellecer la ciudad, darle un perfil mas interesante, mejorando la calidad de vida de la poblacion. Siguiendo aquellas ideas del Ingeniero y maestro Eladio Dieste, de crear espacios a la escala del hombre.

The city of Montevideo is full of dull buildings, that certainly do not give a good visual experience...

The proposal here is to pint around 100 or 200 of the empty walls, in key places of the city with art works, I have already mentioned the idea to somebody related with the Bellas Artes School of Art.

The idea is certainly not new, but would help to add beauty to the city, give it a more interesting landscap, improving the quality of life of the inhabitants. Following the ideas of the Engineer and master Eladio Dieste, of creating spaces with human scale.

Uruguay le ganó a Corea del Sur hoy 2 a 1, el país está de fiesta, y para 2 generaciones, es esta una situación de la que no tienen memoria. Los comentaristas gastan toda su sapiencia para comentar esto, y esta vez no son indecibles críticas como era usual. Aunque algunos se atrevieron a decir que los peores 30 minutos del partido fueron como una película de terror.

Muñidos con una gran bandera de una tela similar a seda salimos por la avenida 18 de Julio a seguir los festejos y saqué algunas fotos que siguen más abajo.

Uruguay in the Quarter-finals of the Football world cup!!!

Uruguay won against South Korea today, 2 to 1, the country is rejoicing, and for two generations, this is a situation they do not have memory. La felicidad esta en las cosas simples de la vida, en la casa de un buen amigo y su novia jugamos al Domino, haciendo bromas sobre las diferentes formas en que se podría jugar. Aun mas pensamos en crear una versión Uruguaya con reglas que he olvidado. Creo que la idea era mantener un flujo circular de las fichas, reciclando las ya usadas.

Happiness is in the simple things of life, we played Domino with at a good friend & his girlfriend place, making jokes about the different ways it could be played. We even though of creating an Uruguayan version with rules I have forgot now!!! I believe the idea was to keep a circular flow of the tokens recycling the used ones.

Bajando por la calle Jackson, caminando hacia el mar, en la cuadra anterior a Gonzalo Ramírez, y a mano derecha existe un Viejo edificio en ruinas. Se trata del viejo Asilo de huérfanos y expósitos. Fue inaugurado en 1875, se proyecta convertirlo en viviendas, pero actualmente está en ruinas. Desde la calle Jackson se puede observar hacia adentro. La imagen me parece fascinante. De todos modos, no dejo de pensar en la tristeza de tantos huérfanos que se criaron allí, y las miles de historias personales que deben haber pasado por este lugar.

Más allá de esto me fascina ver estas ruinas, vale la pena asomarse por las viejas ventanas del sótano, y ver las viejas bóvedas del sótano, la vegetación, y la vieja torre.

Ruins with romantic charm

Walking down the Jackson Street, towards the sea, before the crossing with Gonzalo Ramirez Avenue, on the right hand exist a building completely in ruins. It is the old Foundlings and Orphans House. It was opened in 1875; it is projected to transform it in flats, but nowadays in depleted. From the Jackson Street you can look into it. The image is fascinating for me. Nevertheless I can not avoid thinking of the sadness of so many orphans that grew up there, and the thousands of personal dramas that take place in this building.

Despite this I find irresistible to see these ruins, it is worth to lean out of the old basement windows and see the old vaults, the vegetation and the old tower.

Quiero mencionar un ejemplo del maltrato a los recursos humanos en Uruguay.

Como profesional con un CV interesante me he enfrentado a un par de entrevistas desagradables en las empresas Nuevo Siglo y Scantech. Estamos hablando de entrevistas a nivel profesional, no quiero pensar las cosas que sucederán a otros niveles.

Estuve pensando que se debería abrir un sitio para listar los maltratos laborales y terrajas que dirigen empresas. Así la gente podría consultar ese sitio antes de ir a entrevistas, o ni siquiera presentarse a estas (Si no esta desesperado).

Asistí en estos días a una entrevista en la empresa Scantech de Montevideo.

Para empezar se concertó la entrevista durante la noche, bien fuera de el horario de oficina. Ante tal precedente ya me imagine que se trataba de un lugar donde prima el maltrato, mal pago y la mezquindad.
Las posibles causas para tal hora –me imagine-, pueden ser:

-Trabajan ridículas horas y/o son workaholics (Malo)

-Van a despedir a alguien y no quieren que se vea el re emplazo (Malo)

-Alguien viene del extranjero con una agenda ajustada (Puede ser, pero improbable en el ambiente provinciano de Uruguay)

Pero como uno nunca sabe, accedí.

La encargada de recursos humanos, que me había llamado para concertar la entrevista me acompaña a una sala donde estaba el tipo que dirigía la entrevista.

-no se ofrece agua, café, etc. No es algo que me importe, pero es un primer detalle.-

-Quien dirige la entrevista no indica su cargo, ni nombre completo, medio mal vestido y muy encorvado.-

Se identifica que probablemente se esta lidiando con mas o menos algún tipo de ‘esclavo’ de la empresa. Es una de estas personas que probablemente consideran que lo que tienen esta por encima de lo que ellos valen, y se aferran a ello dando su vida por el patrón, al que son funcionales. Que no les pagara el tratamiento de columna cuando estén ya desgastados.

Me conducen a una sala de reuniones, el sujeto queda mirando en silencio el CV y empieza con unos cálculos idiotas de la edad y de cuando comencé a trabajar etc. Con lo cual pregunta mi edad. (Que se deduce del CV, cosa que en Uruguay es esperado indicar, otra cosa de dudosa ética)

Ante este comienzo ya me siento agredido y de no ser por mantener un cierto profesionalismo, y cautela que obliga nuestro reducido medio, no me levanto dando por terminada la entrevista.

El resto de los quince minutos el tipo esta leyendo el CV sin mantener contacto ocular alguno y haciendo preguntas…mis respuestas son bastante mas parcas que en una entrevista en la que soy tratado como humano y profesional, y supongo que no debo haber hecho impresión, ya que interiormente estoy bastante molesto con el estilo de la entrevista.

De todos modos voy explicando mis diferentes trabajos, proyectos, pregunta porque deje ciertos trabajos (Gran preocupación para el esclavo que busca esclavizar a otros).

Afortunadamente en mi caso las razones son bastante claras, y realmente he aprendido mucho más de mis varios trabajos que quedando en uno por muchos años.

Queda bastante sorprendido de mí retorno al país tras trabajar en el extranjero, ‘estabas cómodo allá’. ¡Que terraja! -pienso para mis adentros-, y doy mis respuestas habituales sin entrar en detalle. Cuando pregunta mis habilidades, además de las respuestas usuales, respondo con bronca contenida y hablando lentamente ‘Creo que soy bueno para observar a la gente y darme cuenta de lo que son’. Con esto quise decirme que el me parecía un ‘mezquino’.

En fin, una vez terminada la pregunta me dice que están haciendo una primera observación de los CV. Esto da por su lado terminado la entrevista.

¡De hablar del trabajo ni miras!. Quizás es porque ya me había descartado desde el principio ya que no piensa pagar nada, y va a contratar a algún estudiante.

O quizás porque asume que cualquiera que el elija va a querer hacer lo que sea que el tenga que hacer. Este es el tipo de estilo de reclutamiento muy usado en Uruguay, asumir la desesperación por el trabajo, y destratar a la gente.

Es bien lamentable, y quien piense que los Uruguayos son amables y calidos, debería cuestionarse como es que en el ámbito laboral prima este destrato lamentable.

Antes de dejar el lugar le pregunto de que se trata el puesto: ‘a efectos de no perder el tiempo tanto ustedes como yo` digo. Solo entonces lo explica. Por lo que me dice, es claramente algo que yo tengo experiencia de hacer, pero una cosa es clara para mí, no trabajaría ahí horario completo todo el tiempo, después de semejante terraja a cargo de la entrevista.

Al irme entrego mi tarjeta de profesional, ‘por si surge algo puntual’.

Luego me voy a nadar y cenar con un Whisky para olvidar a la entrevista terraja del día. Veré si me llaman y como prosigue esta farsa, si puedo venderles algunas horas como consultor bien, pero después de esta entrevista, se que yo no estaré ahí!!!

Mezquinos del Uruguay, entérense sabemos donde están…esto será solo el comienzo!!!

Rude job interview in Uruguay, by petty-minded manager

I like to mention an example of mistreatment to human resources in Uruguay. I have an interesting CV as a professional; I have faced a couple of rude awful interviews in Uruguay, the companies in question are Nuevo Siglo (Cable TV) and Scantech. We are talking about professional level interviews; I would not dare how they are for less qualified positions!!

I think a web site should be opened in Uruguay to list all this bad experiences and mistreatment by narrow-minded people that manage companies here. This site would allow candidates to check out the site before attending job interviews, or even better not to attend them (In case they are lucky enough to be not in bad need for a job).

I attended to an interview in the company Scantech of Montevideo. To begin with, the time arranged for the interview was late at night. Given this precedent I imagined that it was mean, low paying place, where mistreat reins.

The possible reasons for such unfriendly hours-I though- could be:

-They work a ridiculous amount of hours (bad)

-They are about to hire a replacement for somebody they will fire, and do not want him/her to notice the ongoing interviews

-Somebody is coming from abroad for the interview with a tight schedule (May be, but unlikely in our provincial environment)

But as you never know, I said yes….

I arrived to the place, the HR lady takes me to the meeting room where there the manager conducting the interview.

-Not water, neither café nor other drink is offered. Not relevant per se, but it is a firs detail.

-The manager leading the interview doesn’t indicate his role nor his complete name, bad dressed and very hunched

At this point I can recognize that I am dealing with some sort of company slave. It is one of those fellows that probably consider that the position they have is more than what they deserve or can achieve, hold to it, giving his life for the owner, to whom they become useful watchdogs.

They never think that this very owner will never pay them the backbone treatment when they will be worn of working for them.

So far, no problems, all ok. I am led to a meeting room, the guy seats in silence, reading my CV and began some stupid calculations of age in my job history, about when I started to work and so on. He asks my age. (Something that can be calculated from my CV that indicates my date of birth as expected in a Uruguayan CV, another thing of dubious ethic).

After this beginning, not talking about qualifications, certifications, experiences etc. I feel very upset, and only for the sake of professionalism, and moderation -that is better to have in our small market- is that I did not leave the interview straight away.
The next 15 minutes the guy keeps going through the CV, not keeping eye contact at all and doing questions…my answers are very austere answers. Usually I would explain and comment much more when I am not so angry with the guy and his stile. I guess I probably didn’t make a good impression on the guy, due my own reaction to him.

Nevertheless I explained the different roles, jobs and projects I have worked. He ask why I left some jobs (This is very worrying for this petty man, which as a slave wants to have another slaves to sub-serve him). Fortunately my reasons for leaving jobs are very clear, and I have learn much more by changing jobs that staying in one place.

He was surprised of my return to the country alter working abroad ´You were comfortable there´ What piece of a stupid¡¡ I though for myself, and proceed to give the usual answers with getting into much detail. When he ask about what I am think I am good at, apart from the usual answers, I reply with content anger ´I think I am good at knowing people, and realizing with what kind of people I am dealing with´. With this I wanted to tell him he is a pathetic petty man.
Once the questions round is finished, he tells me that he is doing an initial scan of the CVs without more explanations. From his side, the interview is finished.

Not a mere indication of talking about the role. May be is because I was already discarded, because he will paid very low, and hire a student, or maybe is because he assumes that anyone he will choose will like to do whatever he ask to be done. This is the kind of recruitment culture that reins in Uruguay.

It is very sad, and for those who think Uruguayans are kind and warm, they should ask themselves how is it possible that in the workplace, this mistreatment reigns.

Before leaving the place I asked what the role was about ‘so we both do not waste time´ only upon request he explains a little bit. As per what he explains, it is a work I know how to do, and I have done before as well. But one thing is clear I would not work full time for this guy, with such a petty man in charge of the interview.

When I left I gave my professional card ´just in case you may have some piece of work´

After that ugly moment, I went to swim and end up having dinner with a glass of Whisky, as I am lucky to have a job elsewhere, I can laugh and blog about the whole thing. But it is unfortunate to suffer these petty guys making suffer the workers. At least I am mentioning here the companies in question.

Dragones Mexicanos, fabricantes de trompos, rosa mosqueta y capuchinos en el Sporting. (English version below)

Dragones Mexicanos, fabricantes de trompos, rosa mosqueta y capuchinos en el Bar Sporting.

En la feria de Tristan Narvaja de Montevideo se pueden ver todo tipo de cosas. Este domingo en particular vi una serie de cosas a la venta que me parecen interesantes de comentar, la primera a mencionar es el tradicional capuchino del bar Sporting. El bar es un clásico de la esquina de 18 de julio y Tristan Narvaja, y el capuchino con las media lunas constituye una más que buena forma de emprender la tradicional expedición.

Ya adentrados en la feria, y bajo el influjo reconfortante del capuchino, encontramos también a la venta una especie de pequeños dragones de origen Mexicano. Tratamos de comprar el más grande de ellos que estaba a la venta por unos 200 pesos. Pero luego resulto no estar a la venta-esto fue algo confuso- el vendedor, que circunstancialmente nos conto que era ecuatoriano, nos dijo que estaba de muestra a pesar de habernos dado un precio minutos atras. No obstante más tarde, caminando por las calles laterales encontramos otro a la venta, también por alguien con acento extranjero, que nos atendio muy amablemente, finalmente este sí fue comprado. Abajo puse una foto en broma que saque de este animal (Nótese que es una broma sin ninguna intención xenofóbica).

La rosa Mosqueta: En una nota negativa tenemos los tradicionales jugadores de rosa mosqueta, actividad prohibida y que sin embargo sucede en forma impune en las calles.

Fabricante de Trompos: En la esquina de la calle Magallanes y 9 de abril nos encontramos con un vendedor de trompos, palos de amasar, baleros y otros objetos de madera. Realmente los trompos están muy bien hechos, el los vende incluyendo un manual de uso y una breve reseña histórica. Voy a ubicar este sitio en
Panoramio y agregar la foto del vendedor. Se me ocurrió hoy que se debería fotografiar toda tristan Narvaja con una cámara de esas que crean tours virtuales, y registrar que se vende en cada lugar particular. Consolidando todo en un portal dedicado a Tristan Narvaja.

Por último pasamos frente a un lugar dedicado a la bailar milonga, me llamo la atención las esculturas que tenía en la puerta, cuya foto muestro mas abajo.

Sin duda, la feria de Tristan Narvaja es un paseo obligado de Montevideo, su variedad cambalachera es como Uruguay mismo, me quedan muchas otras cosas para contar, como la sección libros. Compramos unos alargues eléctricos, un destornillador, el Dragón Mexicano y un viejo libro en Francés sobre Charles De Gaulle.

Mexican Dragons, spinning top makers, Three Monte card games , Candombe, Milonga and cappuccinos in the Bar Sporting

At the Tristan Narvaja street market of Montevideo, you can see all kind of things. Last Saturday I saw a number of things that I fancied recording for posterity. The first of them is the traditional cappuccino drink made at the Sporting Bar, in the crossing of Tristan Narvaja Street and 18 de Julio Avenue. The place is a classic in the Montevideo Bars map, and I recommend having a cappuccino and Media Lunas (Croissants with ham and cheese) to start the Tristan Narvaja expedition.

Once walking into the Market, under the energizing influx of the Cappuccino, we found some sort of little Dragons made in Mexico. We tried to buy the biggest of them, which was for sale for 200 pesos. (Around 8 euros at current exchange rates). When we went into closing the deal when we were informed that it was not for sale, which told us to be from Ecuador, said that it was only for show.

Nevertheless we continued walking until we found another salesman, also with foreign accent, which was very kind to us and was able to sell us one of those dragons. Below there is a picture I took from the animal (Note there is not xenophobic intention in the writings, just a joke about the dragons and the salesmen –It reads: I am the Ecuadorian dragon, the Ecuadorian dragon I am)

Three monte card games: On a negative side of the walk, we have seen the sadly traditional players of what in Uruguay is known as the Rosa Mosqueta game, witch is a flavour of the three monte card game. This sort of activity is openly done in the streets of Tristan Narvaja on Sundays. Needless to say that is forbidden but for some reasons the police seems not to be doing their job.
Spinning Top maker: In the corner of Magallanes street and 9 of april, we found a maker of sppining tops and other wood made games and objects. The spinning tops are very well made, he sales them, including a user manual (In case new generations have forgotten how to use them), and a little history of them (The game has been around since many centuries ago).

We chat with the guy, very nice person. I will locate the site in Panoramio and add the picture of the salesman. I though that the whole market should be pictured with a virtual tour camera, recording what kind of objects is for sale on each place. Then all of this should be consolidated in a web site dedicated to Tristan Narvaja Market.

Last but not least we walk in front of a place dedicated to dance Milonga and play Candombe, the sculptures made in its façade called my attention, so here is the picture below.

There is not doubt that the Tristan Narvaja Market is a must for Montevideo residents and visitors as well, it is like a giant street junk shop where anything can be found. I have many other things pending to comment, like the book section for example. We bough some electrical sockets extension cable, a Philips screw driver, the Mexican Dragon and an old French book about Charles De Gaulle.

Peatonal Encina, otra obra mal terminada de la IMM

Este es un ejemplo de los desastres municipales, la calle Encina en el barrio Palermo de Montevideo, fue objeto de una obra que la transformo en peatonal, la obra fue oficialmente terminada. Como se puede ver en las fotos, las rejillas de metal, que cubren las canaletas de agua jamás fueron instaladas en gran parte de la calle. Como consecuencia las canaletas presentan un riesgo a los peatones, además de anegarse con basura. La obra tiene algunos otros pozos donde automóviles han quedado hundidos.

The Encina pedestrian street, badly finished work by Montevideo City Council

Just another example of the City council disasters, the Encina Street, was recently made a pedestrian street, the works are officially finished. As you can see in the pictures, many of the metal grids that cover the drains were never installed. As a consequence of this they present a hazard to pedestrians and get completely filled with garbage. The place has holes where some cars have already fallen into as well.

Well done!!

Hace unas semanas atrás, caminando por la calle José Enrique Rodo de Montevideo, me encontré con el profesor particular Ceyser Olivera, toda una leyenda en la enseñanza de las matemáticas en Uruguay. Es una alegría saber que aun sigue en actividad. Es uno de esos profesores que supo vivir la época del apogeo de la enseñanza Uruguaya, y del nivel académico de las matemáticas por la década del 60. Hablando con él de mis épocas de alumno me comento sobre una lamentable novedad. La materia geometría métrica, donde aprendíamos a resolver problemas geométricos euclidianos solamente usando la regla, compas, y el método deductivo. Ha sido removida hace dos años de los programas de quinto científico. Nuestros actuales estudiantes de ingeniería no sabrán que es un arco capaz, una circunferencia de Apolonio, las propiedades de los triángulos, y otros polígonos regulares, como calcular geométricamente la raíz cuadrada de un número, etc. Pero por sobre todo se perderán la oportunidad única de ejercitar el pensamiento lógico, armar demostraciones lógicas, y experimentar la belleza de la teoría geométrica que los griegos nos legaron. Si supiera esto va a ser sustituido por algo mejor no me importaría, pero mucho sospecho, no es el caso. En lo personal, esta fue una de las materias que mas placer me dio estudiar en preparatorios, con el viejo y querido texto de Puig Adam. Se habla mucho de educación, pero simplemente yo aplicaría algunas medidas como. Quitar al IPA el monopolio de las clases de matemáticas y ciencias, y admitir previo concurso la posibilidad de que estudiantes universitarios de carreras científicas den clases. Nada contra el IPA en si, pero la gente más talentosa no está ahí, salvo excepciones. Hubo ingenieros que fueron impedidos de dar clases en el IAVA años atrás, por el corporativismo de los profesores. Exigir matemáticas en todas las orientaciones, y que no se elijan orientaciones para huir de esta. Empezar a reinstaurar el uso de los exámenes obligatorios, y orales. 1 en primero, 2 en segundo, e irlos aumentando progresivamente. Dejarse de parciales y otras simplificaciones, que han en los hechos bajado el nivel de nuestra educación. Dejo estas ideas para debatir, sin pretender tener la verdad última, ya que el tema es más que complejo.

Pathetic! Our education champions decide to remove Metric Geometry from the curricula of the 5th year of secondary school in its scientific option

Some weeks ago, walking along Jose Enrique Rodo Street in Montevideo, I meet with Professor Ceyser Olivera, a legend in the teaching of mathematics in Uruguay. I am glad to know he is still active; he belongs to a generation of teachers that lived and taught during the good times of the education in Uruguay, and of the level of Mathematic teaching in this country. Talking about my times as pupil, he told me about a sad new. The subject Metric Geometry, where we used to learn to solve Euclidean geometrical problems using only a compass and a compass, and using deductive thinking, has been removed from the subjects taught in the 5th year of the secondary school. Our future engineering students will not know what it is an Arco Capaz (The geometrical locus of all the points from which a segment is seen under the given angle), the apolonium circumference, triangle properties, to geometrically compute the root square of a segment, etc. The worst will be that they will miss a great chance to exercise an opportunity to think, and learn to do it, create logical demonstrations and experience the beauty of the Geometrical construction that the ancient Greeks left to us. I wouldn’t worry if i would know that this is being changed for the sake of something even better. But I am afraid this will not be the case. Personally speaking that was one of the subjects I enjoyed more when in the secondary school, with the old and dear Puig Adam textbook. A lot is talked about education, i propose a few measures like, remove the monopoly that the IPA (Institute of Profesores Artigas, the country school of secondary teachers) has in the teaching of science and mathematics, allowing the admission (With a previous test) of University students and graduates to teach in the secondary schools. I have nothing against the IPA, but most talented people is not going to study there, apart from respectable exceptions indeed. There were engineers that were banned of teaching in the IAVA because they were not IPA graduates. A total joke, since you are preparing students for the University anyway, all due IPA teachers corporative interests.

Restore compulsory examinations some of them oral, 1 in the first year, 2 in the second and so on, finish with the system of partial examinations that affected the level of the system. Make mathematic compulsory in all secondary level orientations. Well those are just a few ideas, i put out of discontent with what we are doing. Of course i recognise the subject of education is complex, but i see we are not taking the right steps.

La silla de Viena / The Viennese chair (English version below)

Hoy quiero mencionar un pequeño gran objeto del diseño y la carpintería. La silla de Viena, hay dos en mi casa, que estaban en mi casa materna, junto con otras que conseguimos después, la otra noche, un poco desvelado me puse a mirarla, que elegantes que son. Es un mueble no solo hermoso, sino muy cómodo.

Leyendo fuentes en internet me entero que su creador fue un alemán radicado en Viena, Michael Thonet y que el diseño de estas sillas tiene ya de 150 años de creadas.

Recuerdo haber leído en algún lugar que con un proceso de vapor caliente es que se pueden curvar las maderas. Es de particular mención la madera que forma el borde del asiento. Es una misma madera que a sido doblada completando una vuelta completa. Es bueno ver que la silla goza aun de buena vida y sigue siendo fabricada. Estuve tratando de encontrar los modelos que hay en casa, y no son la famosa silla Thonet modelo 14, sino alguna variación, el respaldo y las patas traseras no está hecho por la misma madera doblada como en la número 14. Las etiquetas originales no permiten ver el fabricante. Pero si se lee que están hechas en Checoeslovaquia, un país que técnicamente no existe más!!

The Viennese chair

Today I would like to mention a great piece of industrial design and carpentry. The Viennese chair, I happen to have two at home. They were in my family home during my childhood. We also got others that we got years after. Last night, I was awake and I was looking at them. How elegant they are! It is not only beautiful but very comfortable to use.

Reading about it in the web i found out the creator was a German that moved to Vienna, Michael Thonet, and that the design is now 150 years old.

I remember having read that a process using steam makes possible the bending of the wood. Of particular interest is the piece that makes the base of the chair. It is made of a single piece of wood but completes a loop. In the model number 14 it is a perfect circle. It is nice to see that the chair as a product enjoys good health and continues being manufactured.

I was trying to find the models we have, and they are not the famous Thonet model 14, but some sort of variation, the top rail is made of a different piece, not as the model 14, where a single bended piece of woods makes the rear legs, the stile and the top rail. The stickers have disappeared and I cannot read the maker, but I can read that they are made in Czechoslovak, a country that technically does not exist anymore!!!

El desastre de la intendencia…nuestra intendencia navega en piloto automático, es controlada por un sindicato que ha olvidado al obrero sin duda. Dedicándose a un corporativismo rebelde que se niega a colaborar en el funcionamiento de la intendencia…..por primera vez no los voy a votar, se debería crear alguna ley para renovar el partido a los cuatro periodos de gobierno, la candidata fue fruto de una cocinada total. Con todo el respeto de la candidata actual del FA, Ana Olivera, la intendencia actual requiere alguien preparado a hacerle la guerra a ADEOM y quebrar el poder que estos ostentan…

The disaster of our city council administration is beyond belief….it is controlled by a union that has forgotten the workers. They just work for their own interest and they don’t help the city administration to work. It is the first time I will not vote them, some law should be created to avoid a party to stay 4 times in office. With all my respect to the current candidate by the FA, Ana Olivera, the city council requires somebody ready to fight a war against ADEOM and bring them to their knees…

Los niveles de ruido de la ciudad de Montevideo son altísimos, no hace falta tener mediciones para darse cuenta de lo alto que son. Los ómnibus hacen un ruido intolerable tanto hacia fuera, como hacia adentro. Ayer subí a un 180 iba escuchando auriculares (Con eso me aisló del ruido externo), pero era tal el ruido interior, que no pode ni escucharlos. Trate ir hacia la parte delantera del ómnibus, pero sin resultado, el ómnibus todo tronaba!!!

No solo basta el ruido de los ómnibus y no olvidar el de las malditas motos, también esta la instalación de parlantes y otros ruidos en bares, restaurantes, aquí me refiero a lugares que no son de bailar ni de onda. Simplemente bares y lugares donde la gente va a hablar. También tengo visto un local de Claro en 18 de julio con horribles parlantes. Lo peor del tema es que mucha gente se va acostumbrando al ruido, y no lo consideran un problema.

Tengo la teoría de que respecto a las reuniones sociales, los Uruguayos tratan de matar su suave depresión con ruido externo.

The noise in the streets of Montevideo

The noise levels in the city of Montevideo are unbearable; I don’t need to make any measurement to realize this. The buses make a terrible noise, both around them and inside as well. Yesterday I jump in a 180, I was listening to earphones (I do this to insolate from outer noise), and I couldn’t even keep listening because of the external noise. I moved to the front of the bus, trying to stay as far as possible of the engine, but with not result!!!

It is not only the noise of the buses but also the bloody motorcycles, also speakers in the streets and in pubs, and restaurants, I am not talking here of places where people goes to dance or things like this, where music is expected, but to places where people is expected to speak with each other. The worst thing is that many people has become used to the noise and do not consider it a problem.

My theory is that the Uruguayans try to kill their mild depression with external music.
